Fencing, swimming, showjumping (on an unfamiliar horse), running and shooting. The modern pentathlon determines the winner to be the overall optimal performer over five disciplines in one day. By design, pentathletes must be well-rounded.
The first documented pentathlon occurred in 708 BC in Greece…Aristotle wrote “a body capable of enduring all efforts, either of the racecourse or of bodily strength…This is why the athletes in the pentathlon are most beautiful”. Since the 1906 Modern Olympic Games, the sport has continued to evolve. Today, athletes use laser guns and must run 4 x 800 on a cross-country course while hitting five targets between each lap.
